The Market Garden

How does our garden grow

We have been growing organic vegetables since 1983, gradually developing different methods of cultivation, fertility building and weed control. We have moved away from  animal manure, relying instead on compost and green manures for fertility.

The wide variety of crops we grow to supply our cafe, shop and veg boxes also mean we can rotate crops around growing areas to reduce disease problems.

Orchard

It was 1992 when we planted our first orchard  with a mixture of dessert and cooking apples. Then again in 2010 another larger orchard of around 200 eating apples. In a good year we can crop several tonnes of apples for our shop, and boxes as well as apple juice for the shop.

Salads

The great thing about polytunnels is they allow us to grow  some crops all year. Even in the middle of winter, salad leaves such Claytonia (also known as Miners Lettuce) can be harvested .
